Unity Parade 2018 will take place in less than five weeks – donate your CAN today

Donations of canned food can be dropped off at HERAUT’s office in Ueckermann Street, Heidelberg, the Heidelberg Mall collection box and Lesedi Community Centre

Plans for this year’s Unity Parade which will take place on August 31, are well on its way. With only a few weeks before the spectacular event, charity organisation and other participating role players are already planning on finalising their floats.

“This year, the parade will travel a 16km route which will start and end at Heidelberg Mall. The route was especially extended to include more schools and organisations,” event organiser Lezaan Hattingh said.

The procession will pass Shalom Ministries, SAVF Pre-school, AG Visser pre-primary, AG Visser Primary, Lethabo Siyangoba Primary, Bertha Gqxowa Primary, Kiddies corner pre-primary, Shalimar Ridge Primary, Life Ministries, Heidelberg Public school, Laer Volkskool and Hoër Volkskool. The aim of this event is to make people aware of the different non-profit organisations (NGOs) in our town and the services they deliver in the community.

This year, they are also attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest canned food pyramid, which will be built in the parking area (Entrance 5 of the mall) on the day of the parade, while the floats travel through town. Participants have seven hours to build the pyramid consisting of around 31 002 cans.

“All cans collected on the day will be redistributed to all participating charities, school feeding schemes and to the destitute,” Lezaan said.

She invited all non-profit organisations that are not yet part of the 2018 Unity Parade, to phone them without delay in order to make the necessary arrangements.

“We need the help of the community to break the record and to feed our destitute communities. Over 50% of South Africans live in poverty, but we are able to make a difference in our own town by bringing people together.”

Donations of canned food can be dropped off at HERAUT’s office in Ueckermann Street, Heidelberg, the Heidelberg Mall collection box and Lesedi Community Centre. Give what you CAN, because every CAN, makes a difference. Cash donations towards the purchasing of cans in bulk, are also welcomed.
