One dead in Ratanda Mall shootout

Shoprite Security Guard shot at point blank range

The police are still in pursue of the armed robbers, responsible for the death of a security guard that was shot and killed when a group of men opened fire at Shoprite at Ratanda Mall on July 20.

Police were alerted of a burglary at the shopping centre at 18:25 and were told a group of men had opened fire.

When the Vispol Task Team arrived at the scene, a group of approximately 15 men had already fled, but thanks to members of the community, the officers were able to track them down. Once the suspects noticed the police were onto them, they opened fire – killing the 25-year-old security guard from Inyath security, wounding constable Matumane and a Fidelity security guard who was in a marked vehicle.

The bullet which struck Matumane entered through the side of his vehicle. Both he and the Fidelity guard was rushed to hospital where they are recovering. One male suspect linked to the shooting was later arrested. The suspect was in possession of a firearm.

Cluster Commander Major General Mbele congratulated the members on the arrest and their swift response. She added that she is confident that the rest of the suspects would be apprehended soon.

Here is the actual footage of the shootout
