Second Unity Parade to take place next month

You CAN make a difference

Heidelberg Unity Parade (HUP) in partnership with several non-profit organisations and other shareholders, announced the date of the repeat of its street parade initiative, which will take place on August 31.

Lezanne Hattingh and Nicolene van der Merwe came up with the concept of a colourful street parade in 2017 to bring together residents and organisations in a memorable event. During last year’s parade no less than 150 dignity bags containing toiletries worth approximately R30 000, were distributed into the community. Around 1000 participants (of which more than 20 non-profit organisations and other role-players) gathered in full glory, with a convoy of floats and people exceeding a total of 1,5km. The community embraced this project and streets were brought to a standstill.

This year, the aim is to break the Guinness World Record for the largest canned food pyramid. For this purpose, over 31 000 cans are needed. The canned food will be distributed among beneficiaries from the local community.

“We ask for any kind of non-perishable tinned food or a cash donation that we can use towards purchasing of canned food,” Hattingh said.

The purpose of the Unity Parade is to create unity and a working relationship between the different NGOs and other role-players, to create awareness among the public with regard to services available to them and to highlight social issues such as disability care, child protection, poverty alleviation, crime and unemployment to name a few.

The unconfirmed planned route of the 2018 parade is as follows: starting point at Heidelberg Mall, past MultiVac, left on the Poortje Road, right in Stasie Street, left in Meyer Street, right in AG Visser Street, left in Breë Street, right in Akasia Street (Mncedwa), right in Denne Road, right on the Vaalam Road, left on the R23, left in HF Verwoerd Street (R42), left in Wessels Street, left in Bloekomboom Street, left in Sipresboom Street, right in Wessels Street, left in Zebra Street, right in Duiker Street, right in Springbok Street, right in Gemsbok, left in HF Verwoerd Street, left in Voortrekker Street, right in Begeman Street, right in Du Preez Street, left in Merz Street, right in Louw Street, left in Beecham Street and back to Heidelberg Mall.
