Scam alert – beware of fake cellphone service providers, warns Police

Have you recently received a call from your cellphone service provider offering you a cellphone contract upgrade?

The Police issued a public warning not to provide any personal information via your cellphone to so-called service providers such as MTM.

According to W/O Tommy Tomlinson from SAPS Dunnottar, a bogus consultant would gather information under the pretense of offering a cellphone contract upgrade to unsuspected victims.

“Shortly after you provided information such as your ID number, bank account details and address, the bogus consultant performs a sim swap. Your number could then later be used in illegal transactions. When you do receive a call from your service provider, make sure to verify the authenticity of the caller before giving out any information,” W/O Tomlinson warned.

You can also visit your nearest cellphone service provider branch to confirm your upgrade details.
