In response to the kennel manager’s recent public plea for help and in an effort to cut, eradicate and control weeds and overgrown grass on the premises of Nigel SPCA, members from Nigel Correctional Services (NCS) visited the animal shelter on May 17, where they enlisted the help of prisoners to give the facility a much needed clean-up.
The clean-up drive forms part of the Department of Correctional Services’ Outreach Programme and gives inmates an opportunity to give back to society.
In less than four hours overgrown grass was neatly trimmed, shrubbery removed and the entire premises cleared of broken twigs and branches. Kennel manager Ann Martin expressed her sincere gratitude towards Chris Snyman (head of NCS) and said as a result of the trimmed grass, she no longer fears for the animals’ lives in case of veld fires.
“Our immediate need is food – any kind of dried or wet cat- and dog food will be welcomed,” she said.
