Several cases of theft of electric gate motors and batteries reported in Nigel

Is your gate secured? Nigel residents are warned of an increase in the theft of electric gate motors and batteries over the past few weeks.

In the most recent case, an electric motor gate battery was reported stolen at a house in Johan Van der Merwe Drive on May 23.

Police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba confirmed that four cases of theft of motor gate batteries and one case of theft of an electric gate motor have been reported the past two weeks.

Residents are urged to ensure that their gate motors are secured in a steel casing or bracket, which must be locked at all times.

Residents are urged to ensure that their gate motors are secured in a steel casing or with a bracket, which must be locked at all times. Suspects often just place their hands through the gate. If the gate motor is not secured, suspects are able to switch the gate to manual for easy access to your property.

Here are some useful tips provided by Nigel CPF:

* make use of a good quality lock to secure the motor’s theft-resistant cage and opt for an insurance-rated padlock

* install adequate anti-lift brackets and welding a piece of flat bar onto the gate rack to prevent thieves from bending the rack upwards.

* combine mechanical anti-theft systems, such as traditional theft-resistant cages, with electronic notification devices.
