Nurses celebrated for their role in providing effective patient care

International Nurses Day provides an opportunity for the Life Healthcare group to thank nurses for taking up the challenge of making ordinary care special through being mindful and thoughtful in the care they deliver.

Aligned with International Nurses Day on May 12, management of Life Suikerbosrand Hospital acknowledged those dedicated staff members who are at the core of the healthcare industry, by spoiling them with a special breakfast on May 11.

“Our theme for International Nurses Day this year focuses on empowering and supporting nurses in meeting 21st century health challenges and recognising that nurses are at the heart of the country’s efforts to provide health for all. It also aims to highlight the significant role nurses play in healthcare through leading healthcare delivery, championing the delivery of evidence-bases practice and remain the advocates for patients and their families,” hospital manager Cora Muller said.

“We salute our nurses for stepping up and taking responsibility of being the champions for the delivery of evidence-based practice, whilst influencing, moulding and inspiring future generations of nurses,” Muller added.

Aligned with International Nurses Day, is Life Healthcare’s Great 100 Nurses initiative which recognises nurses who have been chosen by their peers for epitomising quality and compassion through their daily duties. Launched in 2012, the Great 100 Nurses celebration was established to honour nurses who have made a significant difference to the profession of nursing and in the lives of patients, peers, students and the community.

The initiative annually identifies top nurses within the group. They are recognised and awarded as nursing ambassadors for Life Healthcare and the profession at large. The award gives nurses who join this prestigious group the opportunity to transform nursing care at the bedside and improve patient outcomes.

Life Suikerbosrand Hospital proudly announced that a number of nurses have been nominated for the Great 100 Nurses initiative among which ICU nurse Hettie Bester and Mariska Pienaar (registered nurse – surgical ward). Pienaar was elected as the 2018 Great 100 Nurse winner at the regional event, which took place on May 16.

“These awards act as a reminder for staff and the public that our nurses work hard. They are committed to each other and especially their patients. Through their commitment, they are transforming the nursing world and providing world class care,” Muller concluded.
