Police welcome assistance from community members

Thief met his match as community members react to victim's cry for help.

SAPS Heidelberg welcome the assistance provided by members of the public in combatting crime. As was the case when Ratanda residents Mpho Mokoena and Sipho Khumalo apprehended a suspect in Heidelberg on May 4, minutes after he broke into a house and robbed the owner of her iPhone.

Mokoena and Khumalo were driving down the road when they noticed a white female in distress outside a house. “She flagged us down and pleaded for assistance, saying she had just been robbed and that the suspect was running down the street,” Khumalo said.

The duo immediately set chase and caught up with the fleeing suspect. They brought him back to the scene of the crime, where they handed him to police officers who had meanwhile arrived.

Upon a body search, police not only found the stolen iPhone, but also discovered an undisclosed amount of drugs in the suspect’s possession. Further investigation also revealed that the suspect had been on the police’s ‘wanted list’ for some time.

He was arrested and charged with burglary and theft and for the possession of narcotics. The suspect appeared in Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court on May 8.
