Here’s how you can help promote the preservation of local heritage sites

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Heidelberg residents were presented with a unique opportunity to play an active role in preserving the town’s historical buildings for future generations when The Heritage Association of South Africa confirmed the town as the venue to host its annual Symposium.

But how does it work and how can one get involved?

Participation in the various events that are scheduled to take place from October 19 – 22 is good start.

October 19 15:00-17:30: A Guided Walking Tour of Heidelberg by registered tour guide Francois Mouton (R50pp).

 

 

19:00 – till late:A Tribute to Dr AG Visser at the Old Jail featuring SAMA award winning musician/poet Jaco van der Merwe (R180pp).

October 20 10:00-11:00 :Tour of the Klipkerk by historian Jackie Grobler and architect Nicholas Clarke (R50pp).

 

11:15-12:15 – Heidelberg Station Tour by Bouwe Wiersma (free)

 

 

12:30-13:30 – Light lunch at The Place with a talk by historian Ludwig Ankiewicz on the Southern Highveld (R80pp).

 

 

13:00-14:00 (same venue) – An illustrated talk on the stone wall ruins of the Suikerbosrand by Professor Karim Sadr from the School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies at the University of Witwatersrand (R50pp).

 

 
14:00-17:30 Heidelberg Heritage Tour – A guided tour of all sites in Heidelberg (R130pp).
19:00 – Heritage Association South Africa Gala Awards Dinner (R300pp).

 

 

October 21: 09:30-16:30 A day tour which starts at British American Tobacco, followed by a trip to Shalimar Ridge, Ratanda and concluding at the historic De Rust farmstead.
