BREAKING: Armed robbery at Heidelberg Mall

Four gunmen target MTN, threaten to shoot customer/staff

Four armed men entered the new MTN Shop at Heidelberg Mall this morning and demanded cash from the manager.

The incident took place at approximately 09:40. No persons were injured but the assailants did threaten to shoot the customer and the four staff members.

“My phone was stolen yesterday so we were busy doing a sim swap when two of the four men entered the shop,” the customer told HERAUT.

“They didn’t even bother to wear balaclavas and the one made it clear that he was not playing around.”

The witness, a father of two in his early thirties, explained how one of the gunmen cocked his pistol before telling the manager of the shop to open the safe.

“We were all bundled into the corner office (which doesn’t have a door) and then I just heard how they kept demanding that the safe (which has a 5 minute time lock) must be opened,” the witness explained.

He added that one of the robbers grabbed a MTN shirt and put it on when a security guard approached the shop.

The suspects fled from the scene before the police arrived. It is unclear whether the they managed to steal any cash or stock.

An official statement from Heidelberg SAPS is expected shortly.
