Zuma Authorises Lesedi Probe

Embattled municipality to be put under the magnifying glass - potholes may also be fixed in future

President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday signed three proclamations authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM), the Life Esidimeni tragedy and land reform, Eye Witness News (EWN) reported.

The probe into matters at LLM will focus on, among other things, procurement of goods, work or services by or on behalf of the municipality and payments; unauthorised, irregular or fruitless and wasteful expenditure; as well as failure by the municipality to pay timeously the debts of the municipality.

Earlier today the municipality issued a statement wherein it apologised for the problems local residents are faced with due to an imminent upgrading of its pre-paid electricity system.

Thousands of residents have been left in the cold.

HERAUT has since been informed that the company that is currently contracted to collect the income from the pre-paid token system had not transferred the funds it collected over the last two-to-three months.

The company currently owes LLM in excess of R20-million and it is unclear whether any attempt will be made to collect these funds. The office of the municipal manager promised to furnish HERAUT with a response.

LLM recently repaid a debt of R50-million to Eskom.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane visited the municipality in February and also promised that she would do everything in her power to address complaints of corruption, nepotism and the appointment unqualified staff in key positions.
