VIDEO: Marievale residents describe military action in neighborhood

Women and children intimidated by military police

The Military Police conducted an operation to remove alleged illegal immigrants from their houses at the Marievale Military Base on May 26, but this action was not only in contradiction with the basic human rights of residents, the methods used brought back memories of the Apartheid era for many as Ratels were used to intimidate these people.

Many residents were physically assaulted while woman and children were forced to wait in the cold for four hours at the camp’s main entrance while the base was on lock down.

Local police and ambulances were also denied entry during this time.

Residents were told that they had 24-hours to vacate their homes, but yesterday (May 28) calm was restored.

A detailed report will be published in this week’s edition of Heraut.

Here is an account of the tragic events that unfolded.
