During a visit on August 17 to the upper section of the canal where rigorous clean-up work is still in process, Nigel Customer Care Centre manager Tebogo Molefe explained that ridding the entire canal from debris, domestic effluent and overgrown weed has been a mammoth task up to this point, as parts of the canal are almost inaccessible by heavy machinery such as the bulldozer.

“We have to ensure that history does not repeat itself. Henceforth the canal needs to be maintained regularly to ensure it is kept free of weeds, debris and other obstacles,” Tebogo said.

Meanwhile, the park next to the canal in Springs Road has also been fenced off completely for security purposes, as several incidents of theft and assault had been reported lately.
