Armed robbers caught in Heidelberg

Drama on N3 and Rensburg as police bears down on suspects.

A drama was playing out early this morning when members of the Flying Squad, Metro Police and Heidelberg Police tracked down two robbers between the N3 and Rensburg. Residents were alerted to the drama just before 08:00 with police sirens everywhere and a police helicopter circling the area.

The drama started at 04:20 this morning when two armed men robbed a house in Newcastle. The robbers stole various equipment and fled in the home owner’s Mazda CX-5.

The vehicle was tracked to the weigh bridge on the N3 outside Heidelberg and the flying squad and MPD started pursuing the suspects. When the suspects noticed the police, they stopped the vehicle, jumped out and ran towards Zuid Street in Rensburg.

Heidelberg Police with the help of patrollers of Heidelberg CPF, joined in the search. One of the suspects were caught shortly after and the other one was trapped in an outside building of a smallholding near the old cemetery in Rensburg.

Police recovered the stolen vehicle with all the stolen equipment inside. They also found an unlicensed firearm in the vehicle.
