Shortly after the DA announced Ghaleb Kaene Cachalia as its mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni last month, he promised to visit all 122 Ekurhuleni wards (the municipality he hopes to lead after the August elections) over the next month to meet and really listen to its residents.

Promised he did, and making good on those promises is what he is doing as he immediately launched his “listening tour” to prepare his manifesto for the city. The opposition party (ANC) has a stronger majority in the city than it does in Tshwane and Johannesburg, but if he does succeed, Cachalia hopes to reduce inequality and improve basic services through cleaning up government and boosting the economy.

During his visit to the Alrapark community, residents did not shy away from expressing their anger and disappointment towards the ruling party for not keeping promises made in the past and not delivering on those promises.

“What difference would you be able to make as the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni?” and “How will you deal with corruption within the municipality?” were just some of the questions Cachalia had been peppered with.

“There is one simple answer for all your questions. Wait until after the municipal elections in August and see the positive change,” Cachalia confidently said.
