A year ago on 9 March, University of Cape Town students began the Rhodes Must Fall protests directed against a statue at the University commemorating Cecil John Rhodes.
The campaign for the statue’s removal received global attention and led to a wider movement to “decolonise” education across South Africa. Exactly a month later, the UCT Council voted for the statue to be removed.
This move played an integral part of the Fees Must Fall movement, which saw students from all over the country protest for free education and for the end of outsourcing of staff.
UCT students made headlines again this week after they began protesting against student accommodation shortages. They burnt old UCT paintings found in student residencies and Jammie shuttle.
