New fire station to keep Duduza residents safe

NIGEL - Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s executive mayor Councillor Mondli Gungubele officially inaugurated the Duduza Fire Station on November 5. Nearly 2 000 people attended the opening ceremony in Nala Street.

Among the guests were dignitaries such as Vivienne Chauke (MMC community safety), Morris Chauke (chairperson: community safety oversight committee, Ward councillor Thabo Motaung and chief of Ekurhuleni Fire Brigade, Mr OS Masibi.

“The 1300m² facility was built at a cost of R41 million and created several local jobs in the construction sector. Nine fire fighters/emergency services workers are set to respond to emergencies of around 87 000 local residents 24 hours a day. The facility boasts a complete firefighting hub with an emergency vehicle and two ambulances.”

The need for a second fire station in Duduza arose after the devastation caused by an F2 tornado that swept through Masechaba View in October 2011. A young boy died and hundreds of people were injured.
The long anticipated fire station was supposed to be completed in 2014, but EMM mayor explained that a delay was caused through problems with construction, and the fact that the previous contractors’ services were terminated.
From now on fires and other incidents will be attended to promptly by the new fire station, under the watchful eye of station manager Seefane Malose. More photos and video clips at www.heidelbergnigelheraut.co.za
