Roaming cow causes accident

NIGEL - Three days after HERAUT published an article “Roaming livestock pose hazard to motorists” (October 28), one person was injured after an accident involving an abandoned cow on the M63 between Nigel and Duduza.

The accident occurred around 22:15 on October 31 next to Nigel Cemetery. According to the driver of a Volkswagen Golf, he was driving behind a minibus towards the direction of Nigel, when the minibus driver grazed a cow in the middle of the road.

As there was not time to swerve away, he struck the cow which had been immobilised by the hit from the minibus. The impact sent him over the animal, causing the right shock of his car to completely break off. The minibus driver meanwhile drove off, leaving behind the driver and passengers of a severely damaged car and the dead cow next to the road.

Nigel CPF members were first to arrive and called a provincial ambulance to assist the female passenger. She was treated for a leg injury on the scene but required no hospitalisation. It has not yet been determined who the cow belonged to, as it was only tagged as “SP”.
