Transnet’s dumping of old railway sleepers has councillor livid

Illegal dumping is an eye sore on R42.

Gerrit Coetzee (DA Councillor: Ward 10) is up in arms about old railway sleepers that has been left for more than three months next to the R42 (Nigel/Heidelberg Road). Transnet replaced the sleepers and just dumped it next to the Kaydale Bridge.

Coetzee wrote to Transnet and requested them to remove the sleepers. He also gave them names of people who would be interested in removing the sleepers.

Transnet replied that the sleepers would be removed before July 31.

In September Coetzee requested once again that the sleepers be removed. This time he did not receive any reply to his letter. The sleepers are till this day, still an eye sore next to the road.

“It is strange that Transnet as a big company does not maintain basic principles of neatness and corporate responsibility. The example set by Transnet is horrendous. This is an unacceptable eye sore of illegal dumping,” Coetzee said.
