Beneficiaries of housing development turned away

People were queuing since yesterday morning only to hear that they will not receive the keys to their houses in the near future.

Beneficiaries of the Obed Nkosi (phase 2) housing development were queuing in their thousands since yesterday morning at 06:00 to receive keys to their new houses, only to be turned away by officials of Lesedi Local Municipality.

The disgruntled people had to hear that there is a problem with the awarding of the houses and that it now has to go through an auditing process to obtain certainty on who the beneficiaries might be. The process might take two weeks or even longer. This after lists of the names of beneficiaries were posted for weeks all over Ratanda.
Elderly people and mothers with small children were standing in the long queue and most of them slept there last night.
“We were so excited to finally receive our own houses, and now this. We have been waiting for houses since 2002. No one gave us any explanation and we had to find out what is happening via the grape vine. This municipality is corrupt and this madness must stop.” This was some of the comments made by those waiting in the heat of the day, without any answers.
Kenny Tsotetsi (secretary: Ratanda Community Forum) says they will not leave the matter there, and will call a community meeting to discuss the way forward.
