Criminals caught in front of police station

Three men were arrested after they attempted to steal a car on January 28.
Nigel Community of Patrollers’ (NCOP) members were patrolling Hendrik Verwoerd Street around 13:30 when they noticed three men acting suspiciously.
“I detected the men as they walked across the Nigel community hall’s parking area observing each car they passed”, Willie du Plessis said. “I found their behaviour suspicious and radioed Johan Ackerman (patroller) for assistance”, Willie added.
According to Johan, the men approached a Nissan Tiida and closely inspected the unoccupied vehicle before opening the driver’s door.
“As I walked closer to confront them, they ran away and drove off in a white Toyota Yaris”, Johan said.
Willie followed the criminals and reported the incident to the Nigel police.
“The suspects turned into Breytenbach Street, and parked across from the police station”, Willie stated.
W/O Madeleine von Wielligh (SAPS Nigel’s spokesperson) said Johan entered the police station and informed police officers that the suspects were parked outside.
“Officers stepped out and found three criminals pinned down by NCOP members. The police intervened and conducted a search of their vehicle and person, seizing a golf glove and wireless remote control device used to unlock central locking systems on vehicles”, W/O Von Wielligh said.
The men were arrested and appeared in the Nigel Regional Court on January 29 on the charge of attempted car theft.
Bail was refused by the court and the case was postponed to February 6 for further investigation.
