Together with a clean town goes an aesthetically attractive environment with well maintained buildings and beautiful parks, clean water, fresh air, effective transport system, enforced laws and by-laws and responsibility.
The benefits of such a town include healthy residents and a productive economy, flourishing businesses – and ultimately a town that is highly attractive to investors and tourists.
Wardd 88 Councillor Wally Labuschagne launched the ‘Don’t Chuck It, Bin It’ campaign on November 1 by putting up posters promoting the importance of residents working together to keep the town clean.
According to Wally, a clean town is a litter free city where waste removal services are effective. Bins are not overflowing and waste is not dumped illegally, amongst others. In addition to an effective infrastructure, realising a clean town’s vision requires community involvement and law abiding residents with a deep love for their town and its wellbeing.
“I urge all residents to join hands in the ‘Don’t Chuck It, Bin It’ campaign to make Nigel the cleanest town in Ekurhuleni”, Wally said.
An important element of the campaign is to highlight illegal dumping. This is a massive problem in Nigel and manifests itself in the form of littering by residents, excessive numbers of refuse bags regularly being placed in the road reserve by residents and businesses and heaps of waste being dumped on street corners and in open spaces. Litter is also commonly found in areas of high pedestrian traffic and taxi ranks.
“We ensured to adopt a proactive approach to the challenge, which includes educating the residents on the importance of keeping their communities clean. An important component of the campaign will be to educate communities on the impact of littering and illegal dumping. We will also address the negative impact these unlawful practices have on the environment”, Wally added.
“I call on all residents to embrace the ‘Don’t Chuck It, Bin It’ campaign of the greater plan for our town – to keep our town clean. Let’s embrace the opportunity and take some positive steps towards making Nigel the town of our dreams. It’s up to all of us and remains a collective effort”, Wally concluded.
