Daughter exhume father’s body after Ekurhuleni makes a mistake

The remains of John Jenkinson has finally been moved to the grave his wife Cornelia, came to rest in six years ago.

The remains of John Jenkinson has finally been moved to the grave his wife Cornelia, came to rest in six years ago.
Family members of Cornelia were disheartened after they were informed by Ekurhuleni’s Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture that they have been mourning at the wrong grave for six years.
According to John’s daughter Cicilia van Niekerk, he acquired a companion slot from the department after his wife passed away, with the intention to one day be laid to rest with her.
The department informed Cicilia on October 13 that the necessary arrangements have been made and only John’s body will be exhumed and reburied together with his wife’s.
John’s family gathered on October 17 at Nigel Cemetery and looked upon as municipal workers exhumed his remains and prepared Cornelia’s grave for John to finally come to rest where he initially planned.
Cicilia said that it has become more evident that the coordination between Sipho and the cemetery manager is inadequate and unreliable.
“It was supposed to have been sorted out within six to eight days after John’s funeral, but instead it took the department two months. It’s been a daunting two months. We feel like we have been pushed aside by the department’s incompetence to execute its responsibilities”, Alfred Jenkinson, brother of the deceased said.
“The continued separation of my father and mother’s bodies has been a source of emotional hardship and distress”, Cicilia shared. “It has all along been the family’s wishes to reunite my father and mother by laying them to rest together”, she added.
“The amount of time this has taken just added to the stress. The reburying process is daunting and not something I would wish on anybody”, Alfred concluded.
