A 13 Vehicle pile-up on the N3 just before the Klipriver off-ramp (R550) has left one person dead and one more in a critical condition. According to Mr Clement Masinge (fire chief: Lesedi Fire and Rescue) the accident was caused by dense smoke from a runaway veld fire.

Four heavy vehicles were involved in the accident. The driver of a Transnet bakkie was declared dead on the scene. The driver of another bakkie that was squashed between two trucks, was lucky to get away in time. One of his five sheep however, did not survive the accident. Dr Steven Olivier (Heidelberg vet) came to the rescue of the other four animals and saw to it that they were transported to a nearby farm.

Paramedics and members of Ekurhuleni- and Lesedi Fire and Rescue worked tirelessly in an attempt to free one of the trapped truck drivers.
