Zamani informal settlement is being electrified

The CoE has started the electrification process of the informal settlement, Zamani in Duduza.

The electrification of the Zamani informal settlement in Duduza near Nigel has started. Some of the work already done is the installation of electric poles in residents’ yards.

The electrification project is set to light up over 1 000 households and has created over 100 temporary jobs for the locals.

The project is set to be completed in March.

The residents of Zamani informal are eagerly waiting for the lights to be switched on.

Zolani Magwaza, a resident of this settlement – which was established in 2000 – is over the moon with the development.

“I cannot wait to have access to proper supply of electricity in my house without having to buy electricity illegally from our neighbours who assist us to have electricity for basics such as powering up the refrigerator,” said Magwaza.

The City has budgeted R1.05-billion in the current financial year for the electrification of informal settlements.

Some of the informal settlements that have recently been electrified are:

• Duduza North informal settlement Ward – 102

• Emandleni informal settlement – Ward 29

• Ekuthuleni informal settlement

• Mayfield Ext 6 (Zenzele) – Ward 96

• Ramaphosa informal settlement – Ward 42
