The recent downpours eroded the soil, which then exposed snakes’ hideouts and washed out the snakes into people’s habitat.

Snakes thrive in warm temperatures and with the recent heavy rains, holes – which house snakes – are mostly moist and have an uncomfortable temperature for the snakes to live in, leading them to want to go outside to seek better shelter, which may even be inside people’s houses.

The South African Weather Services has predicted warm and sunny days in the next days, which means we will be seeing more of the hissing creatures out there too.

Snake season is set to last until the end of May.
