New chefs in training

On December 6, JJ Masipa Technical Occupational School in Ratanda held a practical session and award ceremony for hospitality and food technology learners.

The learners completed a two-month chef’s course, where various skills were taught.

The Seta-accredited NDS Chef’s Academy in Maccauvlei Campus was in charge of the training.

The learners gained knowledge in various aspects of food and hygiene intending to become assistant chefs.

During the course, the learners worked in various areas within the sponsors’ workplaces.

The sponsors, Pick n Pay Heidelberg, Eskort Butchery and Quality Meats, are always willing and available to help the learners.

The learners were taught knife skills, kitchen hygiene, food preparation, costing, presentation skills, cakes and icing skills.

The learners’ ages vary between 15 and 21 and level four grading.

The aim of the practical day was mainly to showcase what they have learnt during the course.

School chef Pontsho Mogoiwa, as well as NDS Chef’s Academy MD Lebo Lekotoko, were on hand to taste a three-course meal that was prepared by the learners.

After the meal, Mogoiwa commended the learners and said the world is their oyster and to succeed starts with dedication and hard work.

Lekotoko noted that to be a success, the learners should think positively and not be afraid to start at the bottom and work themselves up.

“When a door opens up for you, go through it and not look for an easier path,” Lekotoko stated.

“You are starting a career that offers a lot of scope for advancement. Grab it with both hands and be the best you can be to learn more every day.”

Principal Olive Nyabole said the school will help where they can to assist the learners in getting employment in the hospitality industry, but the learners are encouraged to go out and try to find employment as well.

To ensure that the learners do not feel discouraged and worthless, the community is asked to become involved and to offer employment in their businesses where a need arises in the different sectors.
