How to become a litter legend

South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind has geared up to make it even more rewarding to cycle for the charity.

South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind has geared up to make it even more rewarding to cycle for the charity.

Events like 947 Ride Joburg are of immense importance to the fund-raising efforts of the association. SA Guide-Dogs rely on the support of individuals and corporates to help the disabled community of South Africa.

They breed and train their own guide dogs for people who are visually impaired, service dogs for people who are physically disabled and autism support dogs for children who are on the low autism spectrum.

“We are inviting cyclists to sign up and cycle for Team Guide Dogs. We need your support to help our puppies grow into an essential part of a disabled person’s life. This is your chance to become a legend in the eyes of our pups,” said SA Guide-Dogs events manager Yolande van Rooyen.

“Not only will cyclists have the benefit of an earlier starting time, but when they fund-raise for us, they will also become a part of our Litter Legends Programme.

“We are hoping to raise R100 000 towards sponsoring a litter that’s born close to the race day. By being part of this programme, you will become a legend in the litter’s eyes.

“As a Litter Legend, you will also receive regular puppy info posts, videos of puppy classes, training, home life and their progress. Litter Legends will enjoy sneak peeks in the development of the litter and be part of their puppy raising and formal training journey until they are ultimately placed with their owner.

“As one of the association’s long-standing guide dog owners and avid cyclists, Deon Smit said ‘losing one’s eyesight certainly restricts one’s freedom to move around in one’s environment freely and independently. With the assistance of my beautiful guide-dog, Chuck, I have managed to overcome most of these challenges and regained much of my independence.

“Being in a position to participate in some of the country’s major cycling races is a wonderful experience and privilege I enjoy through the dedication of a very good and caring friend. The active role my guide dog plays allows me to lead a fulfilling life. But it is undoubtedly with the help of the supporters of guide dogs that an essential part of our lives is made possible.”

Litter Legend supporters play an essential role in the association’s mission to positively change the lives of many South Africans living with a disability. Sign up now and help make a difference.
