Community stand together for clean-up

The first of 12 clean-up events was deemed a success after 180 bags of rubbish were removed from the area.

NIGEL – Earth Owl in cooperation with the Khuthaza Foundation hosted a clean-up event on June 13.

The event was the first of 12 clean-up projects in and around Nigel. The recent Ride4Life mountain biking event hosted by the groups has also provided them with enough funds to plant 100 indigenous trees in the area.

“We are so thankful for the community of Alra Park,” said Roché Pepler.

“They outdid themselves and came to participate in our clean-up event.”

The community of Alra Park assisted in the clean-up event along with other groups like Move One Million.

The clean-up began around 08:00 and lasted until 15:00. By the end of the day, 180 bags of rubbish had been gathered.

“We managed to clean up an entire field and stream that leads down to the Blesbokspruit,” Pepler continued.
“All sorts of rubble ranging from plastic bottles to metal pieces were taken away.

“We would like to thank the Move One Million group who came to help us with this project. They didn’t even hesitate to come and assist us. They donated gloves, bags and water which was an incredible blessing for us all.”
The group of volunteers also received lunch in the form of hotdogs.

Diana Rodriques (left), Charles Barrell, Cheryl Santana and Diavanna Lamprecht (4) from the Move One Million group also helped on the day.

“We would also like to thank Rennie Schwartz and his team from the River Clean-Up squad, who came and assisted us just after lunchtime,” said Pepler.

“They helped us clean the last 200m of field and river we had left. So many people came to help and assisted us in so many ways.

“From Bianca Wannenburg, ensuring that we have enough plastic bags to Wollaston Labuschagne, arranging a skip for us and even the donation of food from Charmon Ulbrecht and Laila Moses. It all just goes to show what we can achieve when we work together.”

The veld and the stream leading to the Blesbokspruit were cleared of rubbish.

Earth Owl has a maintenance plan in place to ensure that the area will remain clean.

“The maintenance plan is mainly in place to ensure that all of our hard work will not have been in vain,” Pepler concluded.

“But we also believe that it is very important to educate the younger generations and today’s youth about pollution and the negative impact it has.”

Children from the community of Alra Park also did their part to help with the clean-up.
