Blaze at Dunnottar flats

An elderly male was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

Ekurhuleni DEMS received a call concerning a structural fire at the corner of Agnew Avenue and Perkins Road in Dunnottar on May 3 at around 7am.

The primary response crew was from the Duduza Fire Station and was soon backed up by Nigel, Selection Park, Kwa-Thema and Tsakani.

Parkland Court, a double-storey block of flats, was engulfed in thick smoke from three dwellings that were already on fire.

The fire started in a flat on the upper floor before spreading towards the rest of the apartments.

Fourteen flats were at risk of being consumed by the blaze.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Fire suppression was immediately initiated and vertical ventilation, by opening the roof section, was initiated to stop the blaze.

Firefighters used three attack lines and a mounted water monitor from fire engines.

A fleet of six fire engines, including a specialised foam tender augmented by 36 firefighters, were in attendance.

One patient was treated on scene for smoke inhalation by provincial ambulance service paramedics before being transported to a Medi-Cross Clinic for further care. It is alleged the fire started in the flat where the patient was sleeping.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and is being investigated by local fire safety officers and the police.

Building inspectors were summoned to the scene to inspect the safety of the building before reoccupation could take place.

Firefighters from Duduza, Nigel, Selection Park, Kwa-Thema and Tsakani responded to the scene.
