EMPD weekend operations deemed successful

Twenty-one intoxicated drivers behind bars.

Ekurhuleni District – Between Sunday and Monday, officers from the EMPD’s OR Tambo International Airport Unit, Overload Control Unit and Social Crime Prevention Unit distributed pamphlets with an important message to citizens, issued traffic fines to transgressors and detained intoxicated drivers in the Nigel, Duduza, Boksburg and Dawn Park areas.

On Sunday between 4pm and Monday at 8am in the Dawn Park area, the EMPD Overload Control Unit members nabbed 21 intoxicated motorists between the ages of 22 and 45 during a crime-prevention operation where portable breathalyzers and alcohol meters were used to test for soberness.

The operation was conducted on Hassink, R554 and Barry Marais roads.

Taverns were open till late in the Elsburg, Groeneweider and Vosloorus areas where verbal warnings were issued.
All the apprehended drivers, facing charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol, were marched to the Dawn Park Police Station.

Meanwhile on Sunday, in the Boksburg area between 4pm and 8pm, at the corner of Jones and Griffiths roads near Jet Park, the EMPD OR Tambo International Airport Unit members issued 48 citations to motorists for defects, failing to licence and register a motor vehicle, for not possessing a driver’s licence and for failing to wear a seat/safety belt, amongst others.

On Monday, between 7am and 3pm in the Duduza and Nigel areas, the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit officers visited parks, malls and other recreational areas where pamphlets about crime awareness, domestic violence and substance abuse were distributed to citizens.

All duties were part of ongoing operations and during the tasks, all Covid-19 protocols were observed. The 21 arrested motorists are expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court shortly.
