Promoting environmental care awareness in Duduza

Duduza SAPS worked alongside the City of Ekurhuleni's Environmental Management Department to help create environmental care awareness in the area recently.

The community of Masechaba in Duduza was recently given a much-needed hand in the form of a recent clean-up campaign by different organisations as a way of promoting environmental care.

Different stakeholders such as the SAPS and the City of Ekurhuleni’s Environmental Management Department joined hands with several NGOs to champion this initiative.

“The primary objective was to sensitise the community to do more to preserve the environment by cleaning after themselves,” said Harry Manaka, spokesperson for Duduza SAPS.

Environmental management provided trees for the Masechaba Park and said that the municipality must collect refuse, but the community also has the responsibility to ensure they don’t litter. Littering is preventable and should be avoided at all times.

“Ekurhuleni Environmental Department reiterated that people must be educated about the health hazards posed by unkempt spaces.

“Littering has a potential to spread diseases that can be easily transmitted by rodents to humans,” concluded Manaka.

Duduza SAPS also supported this initiative to highlight that cleaning up should not only be left to the community alone but that the authorities could also play a role in ensuring safer, cleaner spaces in the community.
A clean community provides little space for criminal activities, such as drug abuse to thrive.
