Auditions open for Ekurhuleni slam poetry

City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has opened a platform for creatives as it will host slam poetry at the Dumisani Masilela Theatre in Germiston on December 4.

This according to Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, CoE’s spokesperson, is a form of performance poetry to support and improve the literacy levels of participants.

Cebekhulu told the RECORD that slam poetry is an important form of language the youth can use to describe their thoughts and feelings about anything.

“This is also a gateway to the world of literature. It inspires the audience to pen and voice their thoughts with skill, which usually implies that they must read, while it is also fun,” he said.

Procedure

The auditions will reportedly be structured in the form of one performance at a time with a maximum seven people per group.

“The poetry categories and adjudication will be based on narrative poem, lyrical poem and dramatic poem. No one under the age of 16 will be allowed to participate in this slam poetry.

“Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the event on December 4 will only be a live-streaming event, and guests will be per invitation with all protocols adhered to,” said Cebekhulu.
