Parkrun in SA still grounded

Despite the country moving to alert level 2 of lockdown on August 18, all parkrun events in South Africa remain suspended.

Whereas millions of runners (and walkers) across the globe are keen to return, no dates have been determined at the time of going to print.
Tom Williams (chief operating officer of Parkrun) said they have recently published the Covid-19 framework on their website, which outlines how parkrun will return in locations where there remains an underlying infection level, as they also put in place the required protocol as set by public health bodies.

“When we are ready to return, we will ensure that our national communication channels explain the requirement for additional volunteers and highlight the ways in which parkrunners can contribute if they want to,” he explained.

He added that registered parkrunners will be contacted via email with pre-reopening guidelines (once a reopening date is confirmed for their event, including a code of conduct (text and graphic) which highlights key aspects such as not attending if symptomatic, social distancing requirements, sanitising hands on arrival and departure and respecting other people’s personal space.

Parkruns are free and take place in cities across South Africa in which people from all walks of life partake in a 5km run/walk/jog.
