SPCAs remain open and still respond to calls of animal cruelty

The nationwide lockdown announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on March 23 has a direct impact on many industries, including the local SPCAs.

False rumours on social media that pets could contract the Covid-19 virus had the public in panic mode. This is far from the truth as the virus can only survive in humans.

“It is important for South Africa to realise that it is impossible for an animal to contract this virus. Pets should not be abandoned in these trying times,” said Meg Wilson (NSPCA public relations).

Public access was reduced from March 27 at all SPCA branches throughout the country, when the lockdown commenced.
According to Wilson measures were put in place where the public can hand over pets in a controlled manner at the gates of the various SPCA branches. The public is urged to practice all hygienic and safety measures when an emergency occurs and pets have to be dropped off at the SPCAs. No adoptions will be allowed.

The various SPCAs will still respond to calls of animal cruelty.

“If you are unable to care for your pet, donate them to your local SPCA. We will still accommodate stray and critically ill animals during the lockdown,” Wilson concluded.
