Mayor of EMM to unveil local historic heritage sites

Preserving the authentic fabrics of history is one of the means of celebrating heritage in the City of Ekurhuleni.

 

On Saturday September 26, executive mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele will pay homage to the rich history of the Kwa-Tsa-Duza area and declare the Indaba Tree in Kwa-Thema and the Duduza Reconciliation Park heritage sites.

The Indaba Tree, situated between the corner of Nkosi and Shabangu Streets, played the integral role of a community gathering point and also served as traditional court where community disputes were settled.

HERITAGE

Meanwhile, the Duduza Reconciliation Park is a historic site where the zero-zero hour saga took place. It culminated in the brutal killing of political activists from Kwa-Thema, Tsakane and Duduza with hand grenades by the apartheid government in 1985.

“By having such landmarks, the City of Ekurhuleni aims to heal the wounds of the past and foster social cohesion in order move towards a peaceful and united communities. Furthermore, these sites will serve the purpose of education the youth of the area of their roots,” says Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
