Local cyclists conquered mighty Transbaviaans Mountain Bike Challenge

NIGEL - Nigel Route 42 Cycle Club members Jurie Davel and Paul Cooke tackled the mighty Transbaviaans Mountain Bike Challenge (MTB) from 15 to 16 August in the Eastern Cape.

The annual event is considered the toughest single stage MTB race in the world as a total distance of 230km were completed within the first 24 hours.
Cyclists peddled great distances in the dark and made use of head lights to navigate at least 100km of unmarked roads, as maps were only allowed to navigate the final passage leading up to the end of the race.
The race presented seven water and food points, which were maintained throughout the competition to ensure that cyclists stay hydrated and nourished. Teams were checked at each of the seven points where they received an official marking to continue.

The route has been described as the most beautiful cycling route in the country and starts from Willowmore in the Karoo. It then enters the majestic Baviaanskloof that stretches over 120 km towards Jeffreys Bay. Along the route are several strenuous climbs cyclists have to endure before reaching the finish point. Jurie and Paul’s team (Icecold Bodies) successfully completed the race in 12h42s and landed the 143rd overall position out of 500 teams.
