Sassa takes precautionary steps amid Covid-19 crisis

Following the declaration of the Coronavirus pandemic as a State of Disaster by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on March 15, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced the steps it will take to implement the recommended safety measures against the Covid-19 virus.

These are implemented with the aim to curb the spread of the virus as well as to educate its beneficiaries as follows:
* beneficiaries are to note that a limited number of clients will be allowed on our premises;
* beneficiaries are encouraged to stay at home if their health is bad;
* straightforward enquiries can be done telephonically;
* all SASSA public gatherings have been postponed till further notice;
* home visits, clinic and hospital visits are temporarily suspended.

“Beneficiaries are urged to use electronic means of payment on paydays and we advise them that social grant does not have to be collected on the first day of payment. Beneficiaries can still collect their social grants later in the month to avoid crowding,” Nandi Mosia (SASSA Gauteng spokesperson) said.

She added that these precautions are implemented in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) of 1993, as well as supporting the reduction and strategies to eliminate the spread of Covid-19.

“We humbly request not only SASSA beneficiaries, but all citizens of the country to do their part in managing this pandemic,” Mosia concluded.
SASSA has furthermore appealed that clients be patient and understanding during this time.
