Woman sent to jail after death of her child

A 32 year old woman was sentenced to prison for the death of her own child.

This follows a lengthy trial which commenced last year, after Annette Fetedi Mashile was found to have poisoned both her children and herself on January 23.

According to SAPS Duduza spokesperson W/O Yakub Rasool, Mashile phoned her husband on the said day, accusing him of infidelity. She became so enraged over the phone that her 52 year old husband immediately rushed home, where he found his restless wife and children on a bed.

He managed to get his wife and children into his car and drove them to Pholosong Hospital, where they were admitted. The 8 year old child later passed away.

An investigation into the death of the child was led by Constables Motabeni and Zwane from SAPS Duduza, which resulted in successful conviction. Mashile was charged for murder and after Regional Court magistrate, Mr Juan Voogt methodically considered the extenuating and aggravating circumstances of the case, she was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, of which seven years is suspended for five years.
