Alstom Ubunye celebrates the life of Mandela at Thakgalang Primary School #ACTION AGAINST POVERTY

Alstom Ubunye employees spent the day honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy with a project at Thakgalang Primary School in Duduza.

On 18 July 2019, Alstom Ubunye employees spent the day honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy with a project at Thakgalang Primary School in Duduza. The project involved toilet and bathroom refurbishments and the aim of the project is to provide dignity to the children of the school by providing them the basic human right of privacy.

A team of employees spent a week at the school to do the refurbishments to the bathrooms and employees donated toilet paper, sanitary pads, and soap. The Alstom Ubunye team fixed and installed doors ensuring that toilet cubicles are private and lockable, ensured that basins for washing hands are functional and cleaned and painted dirty walls in a brighter colour.

Xavier Boisgontier, Managing Director for Alstom Southern Africa and CEO of Alstom Ubunye said: “Alstom will continue with social upliftment in local communities through several ongoing social investment projects, this is our community, and we want to create a long term and sustainable business in the region. At Alstom Ubunye and Gibela, we employ more than 1500 local people in the Ekurhuleni area. We are a significant contributor to the manufacturing sector in the South African GDP and we are committed to skills development.”

Alstom has developed a manufacturing hub in Ekurhuleni for the Southern African railway industry. The brand new Gibela factory is the largest in Africa, and  Alstom has invested a significant amount in the modernisation of the 80000m2 Alstom Ubunye factory in Nigel.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, recently said that the 25-year Aerotropolis Master Plan, has ambitions to turn the Ekurhuleni region into a major economic hub. The Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis is Africa’s first aerotropolis that links Africa to the world, and the world to Africa. In line with this, Alstom Ubunye, a South African Rail company, is committed to the support of socio-economic development, development of local skills and supporting the local industry over a very long term.
