Towing truck driver arrested

Police showed zero tolerance when a male towing truck driver tried to prevent them from carrying out their duties on an accident scene.

Police arrested the 31-year-old towing truck driver for Crimen Injuria and obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties as well as resisting arrest on June 22 around 14:15 on the R42 and Kaydale T-junction east of Bergsig.

Police were attending to a motor vehicle accident when the suspect arrived in his towing truck. The suspect started complaining to the police that one of the towing services is not allowed to tow motor vehicles.

The driver of the Ford Figo (accident vehicle) called his own towing service for assistance. When that towing service arrived on the scene, the suspect reversed his towing vehicle, blocking access to the damaged vehicle. Police reprimanded the suspect and told him to remove his vehicle. He started acting aggressively towards the police officer and accused him of taking bribes.

Police warned the suspect not to interfere with their duties and again asked him to remove his vehicle, but the suspect refused and kept swearing at the police officer.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and appeared in Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court on June 24 on charges of obstructing justice and resisting arrest.

Col Amanda Viljoen (station commander of Heidelberg Police Station) sends a stern warning to all towing service drivers to abstain from interfering with a police investigation or hindering the police in executing their duties on accident scenes. Col Viljoen further warns any community member to abstain from tampering with crime scenes because they destroy useable evidence that might be needed at a later stage or to help the police solve the crime.
