Ekurhuleni Licensing Department in Shambles

Thousands of Ekurhuleni residents have had first-hand experience of the chaotic situation at various motor vehicle licensing centres across the Ekurhuleni Metro.

Thousands of Ekurhuleni residents have had first-hand experience of the chaotic situation at various motor vehicle licensing centres across the Ekurhuleni Metro. These experiences include inefficient staff, long queues and offline IT systems leading to highly frustrating visits to these licensing centres, this according to Wollaston Labuschagne – DA ward councillor in Ekurhuleni.

Apart from these glaring inefficiencies, many licensing departments are experiencing exceeding levels of corruption especially within the subdivision of driver testing as both drivers and schools engage in corrupt activities.

According to answers provided by the MMC for Community Safety, Vivienne Chauke, only 60% of driver’s licence applicants passed their drivers tests between October and December 2018. This indicates that 40% of drivers who do not pass their driver’s licence test either lack the skill in meeting the test pass requirements, or fail for more sinister reasons.

It has also been alleged that in some cases driving schools willingly accept bribes to ensure learners pass their licence test, which is having the effect of seriously compromising safety on our roads.
DA members of the Community Safety Oversight Committee in Ekurhuleni will ensure that officials within the Metro responsible for licensing matters, as well as MMC Chauke, are held accountable in ensuring that corruption is stamped out from the City’s licensing centres, and service delivery is improved.

Labuschagne calls on residents who observe any suspicious behaviour or encounter poor service delivery at licensing centres to email the details to wollaston.labuschagne@ekurhuleni.gov.za
