Youngest African Nations Cup rider selected

A local equestrian rides for gold.

Adrienne MacDonald-Hutcheson (10) became the youngest athlete ever to be selected to participate in the African Nations Cup tournament.

Adrienne and her pony Waterford Flash have been selected to represent South Africa at the event that will be take place in Harare, Zimbabwe from April 11 to 14. Countries competing in the tournament are South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Swaziland.

The African Nations Cup tournament is made up of three disciplines: dressage, show jumping and cross country.

Three teams have been selected to ride for South Africa, totalling 10 riders and their horses or ponies. Two of the riders (of which Adrienne is one) in the 80cm shield team are pony riders, the 80cm shield team is made up of four riders.

Adrienne will not be competing as a pony rider or junior (as she usually does because of her young age), but instead she will be competing as an adult. She will also be achieving her South African Equestrian Federation (SAEF) National Bronze Colours.

Carlisle Stud and Equestrian Park is also proud of two of their riders who were selected to partake in The Complete Eventing Camp that will be held in Kaapsehoop, Mpumalanga from March 21 to 24.

Five riders from each province between the ages of 10 and 14 years were selected to the camp. Adrienne and Casey-Leigh Smit (10) are looking forward to be taught by the top South African equestrian coaches at the camp.

The riders can’t wait to take part in the exciting programme that includes lessons in dressage, showjumping, cross country, course building, a farrier and shoe making workshop as well as lunge lessons.
