Horse thief sentenced to 15 years behind bars

Not only was Sithole an illegal immigrant, but he also had previously been convicted of armed robbery and was on parole at the time of his arrest.

A 33-year-old man from Duduza was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by Nigel Regional Court Magistrate Juan Voogt on February 7, after he was found guilty on the charge of stock theft.

David Sithole was arrested by the police shortly after stealing four horses from a farm outside Nigel on 1 May 2018. The case was investigated by Detective W/O Jaco Viljoen from the Vereeniging Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit and the investigation revealed that not only was Sithole an illegal immigrant, but he also had previously been convicted of armed robbery and was on parole at the time of his arrest.

According to police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba, police reacted swiftly to information provided by a friend of the complainant and Sithole was apprehended at John Dube Village in Duduza, where one of the stolen horses was found in his possession. The other three horses were later recovered at different locations. Some were slightly injured.

During the trial and subsequent arguments, Regional Court prosecutor Bradford Dias reminded the court of Sithole’s former conviction and violation of parole conditions. He further submitted that Sithole is a repeat offender and a threat to society.

After considering all the facts, Mr Voogt ultimately passed a sentence of 15 years imprisonment on the charge of stock theft.
