City Of Ekurhuleni Involves Communities On City Planning And Related Development Matters

Media Release: 14 November 2018

The City of Ekurhuleni is steaming ahead with the City Planning workshops to enlighten residents about the city planning services, such as development application processes, handling of illegal use of land and building plan approvals. The City has already visited several areas in Ekurhuleni from 15 October to engage communities on creating environments and spaces within which they can live, work and play.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for City Planning, Cllr Masele Madihlaba, said communities’ involvement in spatial planning of the City is critical in all areas of development, not only in relation to human settlements. “Though housing is one of crucial forms of development, it is not done in isolation. We need to consider schools, sports grounds, transport routes and shopping centres, etc.,” Cllr Madihlaba said. During the workshops, the residents shared the development needs for their areas and the City will consider them for incorporation into its plans for the specific areas.

The community also got an opportunity to be updated of the developments that are coming to their areas, such as it happened when the City officials were at Etwatwa on Thursday, 8 November 2018. The community in Etwatwa was informed of the extension of operating hours of the Phillip Moyo Clinic in Ext 9, which will also offer services such as maternal health services, dental and physiotherapy services among others.

Some of the developments that residents were told of, were a shopping mall next to KwaShamase, Etwatwa Ext 38 that has been approved by the City. There were also human settlement projects that will contribute to changing of the landscape of Etwatwa. Among them were Etwatwa Extensions 34, 37, 37 and 19.

The last remaining workshops will be hosted as illustrated in the table below.
