Learner back at school following accident

A Grade 1 learner from Heidelberg Public School who was seriously injured when hit by a motor vehicle near the taxi rank at Shalimar Ridge, is back at school. While this may be the case, many questions about the after school safety of learners remain.

Tsebo  Mohale (7) returned to school on August 25, almost a month after the accident which nearly claimed his life.
He was hit by an oncoming vehicle on July 30 after allegedly running across a street near the taxi rank at Shalimar Ridge.
Following the accident, Tsebo was admitted to Life Suikerbosrand Clinic, later transferred to Netcare Union Hospital and transferred to Netcare Clinton Hospital for medical treatment.
While at one stage he was put on a ventilator and things were looking rather grim, Tsebo has made a remarkable recovery and is now back to his old self.

His father Josiah Mohale says although he is unsure about the exact details of how the accident happened, he is concerned about the safety of learners after school, including that of his child.
Josiah explains: “After school Tsebo and other learners are transported from Heidelberg Public School to Shalimar Ridge Primary School.
“Here they wait for another bus to take them to Ratanda. Unfortunately this may sometimes take a long time, causing children to wander around the area.”
According to Josiah this is still the case, even after the accident which nearly claimed his son’s life.
Cllr Thembi Ramothibe, Tsebo’s grandmother and also a ward councillor at Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) said although the family is thankful that Tsebo has been discharged, she feels that scholar transport needs to be assessed.
