4 Killed in N3 freeway collision

Four people (believed to be minibus passengers) were killed in a collision involving a minibus and light motor vehicle on the N3 North bound just before Geldenhuys interchange in Germiston yesterday (June 27).

The accident occurred around 14:00 midday causing the entire freeway to come to standstill.

It is believed that there was a high speed chase between the white Mercedes Benz and the police, whereby the sedan crashed into the back of the taxi full of passengers forcing the taxi to roll-over before landing on its roof.

At least four patients were declared dead on scene, one was critically injured and airlifted from the scene to hospital, eight others sustained serious but stable injuries and were transported to various hospitals with the City of Ekurhuleni.

All patients, the deceased and injured were travelling in the taxi. The occupants of the sedan apparently managed to run away from the scene after the crash.

The freeway was partially closed for the duration of the accident. Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and the South African Police Services (SAPS) are investigating the cause.
