Road Accident Fund hosts trauma conference in Kempton Park
The event was held in line with the RAF’s pledge to reintegrate road crash survivors into society through sustainable actions.
The Road Accident Fund (RAF) hosted a comprehensive trauma care symposium at the Premier Hotel OR Tambo, on September 19.

Themed, ‘Holistic trauma recovery ensures better outcomes’, the conference provided a platform for delegates and speakers to share knowledge and learn about the significance of effective trauma management.
Dialogues included best clinical practices, the psychological effect of trauma, and how to increase efficiencies to ensure better clinical outcomes.
Traumatic injuries cause physical and emotional harm and are sometimes life-threatening to road crash survivors.
All RAF compensation products, such as death benefits, medical expenses, general damages, loss of support, or loss of earnings, are a result of trauma.
“Road accidents in their nature cause deep suffering,” said Collins Letsoalo, RAF CEO.
“Through the symposium, we wanted to advance overall trauma care for road accident survivors and their loved ones.
“We hope these efforts will lead to reduced risks of death and complications for seriously injured road crash survivors.”
In 2023, the RAF hosted a conference on case management, a life-changing aspect of a road accident survivor’s journey.
The conferences boost the fund’s knowledge and ensure claimants have access to the best available trauma care innovations.
The conference fostered a deeper collaboration and knowledge, sharing among various experts in emergency medicine, nursing, surgery, rehabilitation and mental health.
Trauma survivor and motivational speaker, Ari Seirlis, also share their personal and practical experiences with trauma and the incidents that led to it.
Other speakers included an academic head of trauma at the University of the Witwatersrand, Prof Maeyane S.
Moeng; an attorney, Nishaye Padayachee; trauma care surgeon and critical care specialist, Dr Shumani Makhadi; physiotherapy with a special interest in community rehabilitation, Sithembiso Blose; clinical social worker with a special interest in trauma counselling and logotherapy, Elma Bartlett and paediatric nursing specialist, Sister Jane Booth.
