MMC cautions pedestrians against crossing highways

Jay-walking is a criminal offence warns EMPD.

MMC for Community Safety Sizakele Masuku recently accompanied the EMPD on an operation aimed at curbing pedestrians crossing the R21.

Sixteen pedestrians were arrested on charges of jaywalking during the blitz.

Working with the acting chief of police, Julius Mkhwanazi and director Gwen Gina, Masuku appealed to members of the community to refrain from this practice stating that it is illegal and extremely dangerous to both motorists and those travelling on foot.

“Pedestrians are urged to use designated footbridges that were constructed with the sole purpose of allowing them to safely cross over some of the city’s major highways,” he said.

“Too many people have suffered extensive injuries or died due to these activities.

“The purpose of the operation was to highlight the potential risks pedestrians face daily.”

Mkhwanazi said that the EMPD will be conducting regular operations to curb jaywalking.
