Hidden career gems in security services offer hope amid rising youth unemployment

De Sousa emphasised that roles in today’s evolving world of security extend beyond traditional security guards or reaction officers.

Youth unemployment weighed heavily on the minds of many first-time voters in the recent national and provincial elections.

The youth unemployment rate in South Africa surged to 59.40% in the fourth quarter of 2023, up from 58% in the third quarter, according to Statistics South Africa.

Vasco de Sousa, chief information officer for Fidelity Services Group (FSG), believes it is time for the youth to do their homework as ‘really cool’ opportunities and career paths can be found in unexpected places, as the security services sector.

“Imagine creating autonomous security drones or robotic guards patrolling sensitive areas, using AI to predict security threats and enhance incident response, or being the software engineer who develops the ultimate secure solution to protect your company’s systems.

“There are many unique and interesting roles in the security industry, aiming to inspire young people this Youth Month with opportunities that blend technology and protection, empowering them to innovate and make a positive impact.

“A career in security services offers a dynamic environment, technological exposure, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on safety and security, especially in roles that embrace new digital and innovative technologies,” he said.

De Sousa emphasised roles in today’s evolving world of security extend far beyond traditional security guards or reaction officers.

“The industry now demands robotics and automation specialists, advanced camera and vision systems engineers, AI experts, coding and software engineers, data analysts and scientists, business intelligence specialists, and internet-of-things programmers. Cybersecurity is another burgeoning field.”

De Sousa noted young people interested in this area should focus on technical subjects and computer-related courses to understand the scientific principles of cybersecurity.

“There are cool roles at Fidelity Services Group within cybersecurity that young people can explore, such as information security analyst, ethical hacker (penetration tester), security consultant, and security software developer,” he said.

De Sousa highlighted success stories from the Fidelity Services Group that demonstrate the potential for growth in this sector.

“Talha Moolla began his career at Fidelity as an IT graduate intern in 2023. He quickly gained hands-on operational experience across various divisions and applied his knowledge and skills.

“His enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and strategic problem-solving abilities led to his permanent appointment as a junior IT business analyst after completing his internship in April.

“Vincent Taljaard’s journey at FSG began in 2014 as a young IT technician. His passion for managing IT projects and service management saw him excel, earning a Bachelor’s degree in IT Management in 2017 and subsequently being appointed group IT services manager.

“By 2022, Vincent had advanced to IT service and operations manager, where he implemented a 24/7 IT monitoring operations centre, significantly benefiting the company,” said De Sousa.

De Sousa offers seven pieces of valuable advice for young people wanting to break into these roles in the security services industry:

1. Explore diverse roles.

2. Pursue relevant degrees or certifications in fields like computer science, engineering, data science, or security management.

3. Attend workshops, conferences, and industry events to stay updated on emerging technologies and trends.

4. Gain practical experience through internships, co-op programs, and entry-level positions, or volunteer for security-related projects.

5. Connect with professionals in the industry through LinkedIn, industry associations, and local security events, and seek mentors.

6. Develop your soft skills; communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial.

7. Be ethical and trustworthy. Uphold high ethical standards and maintain confidentiality.

“The security services industry is diverse and will continue to evolve, leveraging AI, robotics and automation to enhance safety and mitigate risks.

“Human expertise will remain essential, complemented by technological advancements,” said De Sousa.

De Sousa said while the skills gap remains a reality, the industry will always need skilled professionals who understand both traditional security and emerging technologies.

“The world is your oyster if you are willing to put in the effort, actively seek and embrace opportunities.

“We sincerely hope this resonates with the youth who may be at their wits’ end about their futures.

“Our doors are always open to talent prepared to help us better secure people, places, and the future of our country through innovation and dedication,” said De Sousa.
